Achievements

The environment can be protected and healed by passing laws that do the right thing for the climate and the country.
We have done this before!
Fifty years ago, congress and the president passed laws to protect the environment, including the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and establishing the Environmental Protection Agency.
Republicans and democrats saw the danger that pollution was causing to our water and the air and our beautiful country. They took action, and it worked.

Cleaning our Waterways
Rivers that were terribly polluted now flow cleanly, with water that is welcoming to people who fish and who swim.
The Cuyahoga River in Ohio shown to the right is a wonderful example.

Saving Endangered Species
Our proud bald eagle, once endangered, now flies free in 48
states.

Saving the Ozone Layer
In the 1980s, we learned that CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) gases were destroying the ozone layer in the atmosphere, creating the risk of exposing us to high levels of ultraviolet light, which can cause skin cancer.
In response to this threat, the entire world came together in 1987 to pass laws limiting the release of CFCs into the atmosphere as part of the Montreal Protocol.
This worked. The ozone layer has started to heal. New amendments to this international agreement have strengthened it, increasing the protection of the atmosphere for all
of us.

Cleaning up old pollution
In June 2024, the Biden-Harris administration announced a $725 million investment to clean up old pollution caused by coal mining.
This funding will create jobs and help with economic revitalization in coal communities.
